Letters Patent No. 104,061, dated June 7, 1870.
IMPROVED TOOL POR AQU'TJLIINTGI- OFF BOLTS, RODS, 8m.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same 'To all 'whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HENRY PETERS, of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Bolt-Gutters, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a device for cutting off and trimming the ends of bolts, rods, wire, 85o.; and
It consists in a certain arrangement ot parts, all constructed as specified, in virtue of which less power is required to sever the bolt than is usual with similar implement-s, and a constant tendency is impaited to the movable cutter to withdraw from the stationary cutter, as hereinafter-fully explained.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool, with the blades closed together;
Figure 2, the same, with the blades apart or open; and
Figure 3 is a cross-section ot` the tool on the line xx.
In constructing my bolt-cutter, I first provide a lever or handle, a, having two arms or cars f near one end, and to this lever pivot another and shorter lever, 1,the back or free end of which lies between the arms f, as shown in all the figures.
To one side of the lever a., near its hinge or pivot Ii., I secure a shear-blade, h, and, to the lever (l, I secure a 'corresponding blade, h', so that, when the two levers are brought together, the edges of the blades will meet. These blades are set into proper recesses in the levers, so that the surfaces of the blades and levers shall be nsh with each other.
To the arm 1,1 secure a spring, e, the end of which lies under arm d, so as to keep tbe-levers apart and the shear-blades open. Y
Between the ears or arms f, I pivot a lever, b, baving an eccentric or cam-head, c, which bears upon the lever d, as shown, so that, by drawing the levels a and b together, the cam c operates the lever al, and thus presses the shear-blades together with great force and power, upon any article inserted between them.
The 'blades h and h', I bevel from their edge inward, as shown in iig. 3, thus enabling the operator to cut oti the projecting ends of bolts, rods, 85o., tlush with the nuts or other surfaces from which they project.
Then the levers are not detained, the spring maintains the shears in anopen position, as shown in g. 2.
In this manner I produce a very simple, compact, and powerful cutter, of great service to blacksmiths, Coopers, Vand artisans in general.
I do not claim as my invention any of the parts, separately, ot the device herein described, nor do I claim, broadly, the combination of thenrg; but
What I do claim as my invention is- The arrangement, relatively to-one another and to the handle a, cam-lever b, and rigid arms f, oi'the'arm d, springs, and cutters h, the arm d heilig, in effect, a lever of the second order, the cutters being located on the handle and lever respectively, between the fulcrum and the point at which the power is applid, and the constant tendency of the spring being to separate the movable cutter from the stationary cutter.
