Clumps of basal leaves, erect stems. Plant gray-green with long hairs. Leaves fern-like with largest 3-lobed segment at top, few deeply cut teeth. Flower stem has 1 leaf pair near center. Flowers usually 3 on nodding stems, sepals fused to form a cup with tips curved outward, petals red, cream, or yellow. Seed heads more than 2 in. long of feathery tails, often glowing purplish in the sun. Grows in dry meadows, sagebrush scrub, pine forests, at mid to high elevations.
