Award-winning journalist Sarah Burke has been named Vice President and News Director of CBS News and Television Stations’ local businesses in the New York City market, including WCBS-TV (CBS 2), WLNY-TV (TV 10/55), CBSN New York and CBSNewYork.com. The announcement was made today by Johnny Green, President and General Manager of CBS New York.

Burke, who will assume her new role on Sept. 27, has previously spent 12 years as a member of the CBS Stations family, including nearly two years with WCBS and WLNY. She served as Executive Producer of CBS 2 News at 11:00 PM and WLNY’s 9:00 PM newscast from September 2011 to April 2013. She then was named Assistant News Director at WBZ-TV in Boston, and later served as the station’s Acting News Director for six months in 2014. Most recently, she has been the Assistant News Director at WLS-TV in Chicago since August 2014.

“From executive producing coverage of Superstorm Sandy and the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School during her previous stint at CBS New York, to playing a significant role in WBZ’s Peabody Award-winning coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, an event that took place on her first day on the job, Sarah has demonstrated outstanding leadership, poise and a commitment to delivering high-quality journalism,” Green said. “We look forward to welcoming her back to CBS New York, and having her work with our talented news team to drive growth across our broadcast, streaming and digital platforms.”

Burke’s previous CBS Stations experience also includes nearly 10 years with KCNC-TV in Denver, where she started as a news producer in 2002 and later served as executive producer of the station’s 10:00 PM newscast.

Prior to joining KCNC, Burke spent nearly two years as a producer at KMGH-TV in Denver. Before that, she worked as a news producer at WXIN-TV in Indianapolis. She began her career as an intern at WGN-TV in her hometown of Chicago.

Burke and her WBZ colleagues received a George Foster Peabody Award and an Alfred I. duPont Award for their work covering the Boston Marathon bombing. She has also earned multiple regional Edward R. Murrow and Emmy Awards.

Burke earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Miami University of Ohio. She is the proud parent of two children.
