But he was to reach international recognition together with his wife, Maj Sjöwall, for ”Study on a Crime,” a series of ten novels – of which several have been films - describing murder investigations at the Stockholm Police Department. The first book about superintendent Martin Beck and his colleagues, ”Roseanna,” was released in 1965 and the last book in the series, ”The Terrorists” was to be released posthumously after his death in 1975. In 1973 a Hollywood production was made on book no 4, ”The laughing policeman”, starring Walter Matthau, in which Stockholm was changed for San Francisco.
