General Features

Overview: The Sony NWZ-A728 Digital Media Player supports multiple file types for audio and video. The unit's 8GB built-in memory can store up to 1,850 songs or up to 30 hours of video for an expansive portable multimedia collection that fits in your pocket or the palm of your hand. Its high-resolution 2.4" QVGA LCD lets  you watch video in portrait or landscape mode. The Sony NWZ-A728 Digital Media Player includes a pair of earbud-style headphones and a USB cable.

8GB Built-In Memory: The Sony digital media player's built-in 8GB flash memory is able to store up to 1,850 Songs (based on 4 minutes per song at 128 kbps in MP3 format), or up to 30 hours of video (approximate recordable times are estimated where only video is transferred. The time may vary depending on the conditions under which the player is used).

2.4" QVGA LCD Screen: The unit's high quality, 2.4" QVGA (320 x 240) LCD screen  allows you to easily view your movies, photos and music information. The unit's LCD display allows for easy viewing of your videos and photos in either a portrait or landscape position. You can even view Cover Art information on the unit's LCD screen. You can set the display brightness of the LCD screen to one of five levels.

5-Way Button: The digital media player features a 5-way button to operate the unit's playback and menu functions.

EX Series Headphone: The Sony NWZ-A728 comes supplied with a pair of EX Series Earbud-style headphones that deliver deep bass sound from a closed design that's compact, lightweight and comfortable to wear thanks to changeable silicon rubber ear-buds that also help isolate outside sounds.

Clear Audio Technologies: The Sony NWZ-A728 digital media player utilizes the following Clear Audio Technologies to reproduce crystal clear, CD-quality audio.

• Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE): restores the higher sound frequency lost when creating compressed music files; can be set to On or Off
• Dynamic Normalizer: reduces the volume level between songs; you can turn this feature On or Off
• Clear Stereo: reduces signal leakage from one channel to another; can be set to On or Off
• Clear Bass: enhances the bass sound while minimizing distortion; can be adjusted from 0 to +3
• EQ: 5 Band EQ (400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.3kHz, 16kHz) with preset settings of Heavy, Pop, Jazz, Unique, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Off; each EQ band can be adjusted from -3 to +3 in Custom 1 or Custom 2 mode
• VPT Surround: choose from Studio, Live, Club, Arena, Matrix or Karaoke to add a virtual surround effect

AVLS (Volume Limiter): This feature limits the maximum volume to prevent auditory disturbance or distraction.

Removable Stand: The digital media player comes supplied with a plastic stand which allows you to prop up the unit vertically or horizontally to view videos and photos.

Built-In Clock/Calendar: This unit features a built-in 12/24-hour clock and calendar which can be set manually and displayed on the unit's LCD screen.

Multi-Language Display: You can select from a variety of languages for the display of menus and messages on the player including English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German.

Battery Life: The digital media player's built-in rechargeable Lithium battery allows up to 36 hours of audio playback when playing back MP3 files at 128kbps, and up to 10 hours of video playback when playing back MPEG 4 at 384kbps. The integrated rechargeable battery can be charged using the supplied USB cable when connected to your PC. The NWZ-A728's battery takes 3 hours to fully charge and 1.5 hours for an 80% charge.

WM Port: The Sony digital media player features a proprietary WM-Port (22-pin multiple connecting terminal) which allows connection to your PC via the supplied USB cable and software.

Audio Playback

Audio Playback: The NWZ-A728 supports playback of MP3 (32-320/VBR kbps) and WMA (32-192/VBR kbps) DRM and non-DRM audio files downloaded from multiple sources. The player also supports non-DRM AAC (16-320/VBR kbps) content, giving you multiple options for downloading music. Copyright protected AAC-LC files cannot be played back. In addition, the unit support Linear PCM with a bit rate of 1,411 kbps.

Music Search: The Sony NWZ-A728 digital media player features the following music search modes.

• Music Library: Search for music on the NWZ-A728 digital media player by All Songs, Album, Artist, Genre, Release Year, Folder and Playlists.
• Initial Search: Use the first letter of the song, album or artist to easily find the music you are looking for.

Play Modes: The player offers various playback modes.

• Normal: The songs within the playback range are played back in the song list order
• Shuffle All: The songs within the playback range are played back in a random order.
• Time Machine Shuffle: The unit's Time Machine Shuffle feature allows you to shuffle play among songs from a randomly selected year (Information will come from the CDDB Gracenote Database which requires internet connection and may have a fee).
• Repeat All: The songs within the playback range are played back in the song list order and the playback repeats.
• Repeat Song: The current song or the song selected from a song list is played back repeatedly.
• Shuffle&Repeat: The songs within the playback range are played back in random order and the playback repeats.

Album Display Format: The digital media player offers three types of album list formats to choose from that can be displayed on the unit's LCD screen - Title Only, Title & Cover Art, or Covert Art Only.

Video/Photo Playback

Video/Photo Playback: You can play videos or Photos by transferring video files to the NWZ-A728 using the supplied Media Manager for WALKMAN software or Windows Explorer. The Sony NWZ-A728 supports playback of your favorite videos right on the player using MPEG 4/M4V (2,500 kbps) and H.264/AVC (768 kbps) profiles at 30 frames per second (maximum of 2GB or 1,000 files). The Sony digital media player also supports playback of JPEG still images up to 4,000 x 4,000 pixels.

Video Orientation: You can set the video/photo orientation to vertical or horizontal. The vertical setting displays a 240 x 180 pixel video while the horizontal setting displays a 320 x 240 pixel video.

Zoom: You can zoom in on the currently playing video. The unit features three Zoom settings.

• Auto: video image is automatically enlarged/reduced by full fitting it to the available display area, keeping the aspect ratio
• Full: video image is manually enlarged/reduced by fully fitting it to the available display area, keeping the aspect ratio
• Off: video image is not enlarged/reduced, and appears at the original resolution

Video/Photo Information: You can choose to display or hide detailed information of a video or photo such as its title, playback icon, playback status and elapsed playing time during playback.

Photo Slide Show: You can display photos in a selected folder continuously in a slide-show fashion. You can set the time each photo is displayed from Slow, Medium or Fast.

Video Play Modes: The player off two types of play modes to choose from.

• One File Play: plays back one video file only
• Continuous Playback: plays back all video files stored on the player continuously

Various Speed Search: The NWZ-A728 allows you to fast forward and rewind through a video at 10x, 30x, and 100x normal speed. You can also skip to the beginning of the current video or the beginning of the next video, as well as scan forward or backward through a paused video.

Video/Photo List: The Video and Photo List displays a list of the video or photo files stored on the player. The player offers three display formats for the video list - Title Only, Title With Thumbnail, or Thumbnail Only.

Video Sound Only: While watching a video you can turn the picture off completely and only listen to the audio from the video file.

Supplied Software

WALKMAN CD-ROM: The NWZ-A728 digital media player comes supplied with the WALKMAN CD-ROM with the following bundled software.

• Windows Media Player 11: Windows Media Player 11 can import audio (MP3/WMA) and photo (JPEG) data  from CDs and transfer data to the player. When you use copyright protected WMA audio files, use this software.
• Media Managers for WALKMAN: Media Manager for WALKMAN can transfer music (MP3/WMA/AAC/WAV), photos (JPEG), or videos (MPEG-4 Simple Profile/AVC-H.264 Baseline Profile) from the computer to the player and import audio data form CDs. Media Manager for WALKMAN can also subscribe to RSS feeds (music/video) and transfer the music and video files that have been downloaded from RSS channels. Media Manager for WALKMAN is not compatible with DRM files.
• MP3 Conversion Tool: ATRAC files need to be converted using bundled MP3 Conversion Tool (audio data purchased from a music distribution service on the Internet cannot be converted). When converting ATRAC files to MP3 files, the ATRAC files are not deleted. You can delete the ATRAC files if desired.
