COLUMBUS, Ohio—Google announced Wednesday it is building two new data centers in Central Ohio to boost the tech giant’s artificial intelligence efforts and tools like Google search, Maps, and Gmail.
The data centers, already starting to be built in south Columbus and Lancaster, will create about 1,000 temporary construction jobs, as well as an unknown number of positions when the centers open, according to Jessica Ryan, a spokeswoman for Google. Data centers, in general, tend to create a significant number of jobs while they’re being constructed but a comparatively small number of long-term jobs after they open.
