This week's Feature Album, Telemann: Chamber Music For Bassoon and Guitar, showcases just how versatile the bassoon can be.
It usually appears as an accompanying instrument, or one that sits in the middle of the woodwind section. However, here bassoonist Rainer Seidel and guitarist Daniel Valentin Marx present the instrument in a soloistic role, alongside a guitar. Who would have thought to combine these two instruments? But the blend of the slightly raspy bassoon works well with the plucking of the guitar, and it results in a very calming listen.
The music featured here is some of Telemann's best chamber work. All of the works presented are arrangements (by Daniel Valentin Marx) of Recorder or Viola da Gamba sonatas, all written in the 1730s.
