Description

Bronze statue of Matthew Flinders as a sea captain with telescope. At his feet his cat Trim (born at sea, Indian Ocean 1797-disappeared Mauritus 1803 - Wikipedia.), who accompanied Flinders to Australia in 1801, survived shipwreck and capture by the French only to disappear in Mauritius.
On the base plate, in front of Flinders, a map of Australia with his route and a ship, with title matthew flinders 1774-1814 and in Australia the text voyage / to / terra australis / 1801 1802 and 1805

In the pavement around the statue are three other bronze plaques:

This panel and the nearby statue bt Judith Holmes Drewry have been produced by Fens Tourism Ltd. with funding from the European Union Regional Development Fund and Lincolnshire County Council. The pavement plaques nearby, inspired by Flinders's journeys of discovery, were created in a joint project between Judith Holmes Drewry and pupils from the Thomas Cowley High School in Donington.
