Cabo da Roca

The farthest spot west coast of continental Europe (see map). It is located in the Sintra region in Portugal. As the westernmost point of mainland Europe, it is a significant landmark for travelers and geography enthusiasts. The coordinates of Cabo da Roca are 38° 47′ north and 9° 30′ west. If you are in Portugal near Lisbon, just hit the road to see that place, feel and hear the ocean and make a selfie. It is one of those (!) spots. (As it can be really windy there, watch to not to lose your cellphone).

The cape is characterized by rugged cliffs that rise approximately 150 meters above the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is dramatic, with the ocean waves crashing against the rocks and the wind shaping the vegetation. The region has a diverse range of flora, adapted to withstand the salty ocean spray and strong winds. Wildlife in the area includes various species of birds that nest on the cliffs. Cabo da Roca is home to a lighthouse that has been operational since 1772. The current lighthouse dates back to 1842 and is still an important beacon for ships navigating the coast. There is a monument with a cross and an inscription by Portuguese poet Luís de Camões that marks it as the place “where the land ends and the sea begins”.
